Monday Morning Keynote

Keynote: Relentless

Hamish Brewerknown as the relentless, tattooed, skateboarding principal from Northern Virginia—isn't your normal principal. Hamish is high octane, constantly calling on his students to Be Relentless. Mr. Brewer has become known as an educational disrupter who transcends the status quo and typical educational norms.

Mr. Brewer was recognized in 2017 as the NAESP National Distinguished Principal from Virginia, among his many notable accolades. Hamish is the best-selling author of Relentless - Disrupting The Educational Norm, published in 2019.

Monday Afternoon Keynote

Keynote: Culturally Responsive School Leadership: From dialogue to system change

Dr. Muhammad Khalifa is a professor of educational administration and Executive Director for Urban Education Initiatives at the Ohio State University. Previously, Dr. Khalifa held the Robert Beck Endowed Professorship in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy, and Development at the UMN. Having worked as a public school teacher and administrator in Detroit, Dr. Khalifa's research examines how urban school leaders enact culturally responsive leadership practices. His latest book, Culturally Responsive School Leadership (2018) was published by Harvard Education Press.

Tuesday Morning Keynote

Keynote: Leading with Equity Literacy: Avoiding Common Detours, Embracing Critical Principles

Paul Gorski is the founder of the Equity Literacy Institute and EdChange. He has more than 20 years of experience helping educators, nonprofit workers, and others strengthen their equity efforts. He has worked with educators in 48 states and a dozen countries. Paul has published more than 70 articles and has written, co-written, or co-edited twelve books on various aspects of educational equity including Reaching and Teaching Students in Poverty: Strategies for Erasing the Opportunity Gap and Case Studies on Diversity and Social Justice Education (with Seema Pothini). He is the author of the Multicultural Pavilion, an online compendium of free resources for educators. Paul earned a PhD in Educational Evaluation at the University of Virginia.

Tuesday Afternoon Keynote

Keynote: Dream Big, Live Colorfully, Lead Boldly: Developing Your Best Self at School and Home

Jessica Cabeen currently serves as the principal of Ellis Middle School in Austin, MN. Prior to this role she was the Principal of the "Happiest Place in Southeastern Minnesota", Woodson Kindergarten Center. She has been an assistant middle school principal, a special education supervisor, and special education teacher. Jessica was awarded the NAESP/VINCI Digital Leader of Early Learning Award in 2016 and in 2017 was named the MN National Distinguished Principal. She is a Fellow for the National Elementary Association of School Principals and a Future Ready Principal™

She has written four books: Hacking Early LearningBalance Like a PirateLead with Grace and Unconventional Leadership.

An All-Access pass to all sessions!

Your registration will include access to all live sessions the day-of the event. In addition, you will receive access to ALL session recordings and material for 30 days following the event. That means you can earn up to 10 CEUs per day for the sessions you watch live and the sessions you return to later!

The MESPYs is the premier awards celebration honoring Elementary and Middle-Level principals in Minnesota for their incredible work. This year we are holding the MESPYs separate from Institute as a virtual, live-streamed event on Thursday, April 15, 2021 - 7pm! Save the date so you can join in the celebration!

All MESPA members are welcome to attend our Annual Meeting of the Membership on Friday, February 19, 2021, from 9:00-10:00 a.m via Zoom. The meeting will include a financial report, adoption of the 2021 Legislative Priorities, and will be followed by a Legal and Legislative Lowdown featuring Roger Aronson and a panel of MN legislators from 10:15-11:15am!
